Choosing the Right Tile: Slip Resistance and what is an 'R Rating'?
When you're choosing new flooring, it’s easy to focus entirely on the style, colour, and pattern. But there is a simple detail you may need to consider to ensure your floor is just right for your project: The R Rating.
Simply put, the "R Rating” measures slip resistance. It tells you how much grip a tile has when wet, running on a scale from R9 to R13.
How is the R Rating Tested?
The "R" stands for Ramp, and the test is surprisingly literal!
To get its rating, a tile is placed on an adjustable ramp and coated in a light layer of oil. A tester wearing standard safety boots walks back and forth on the tile while the ramp is slowly tilted steeper and steeper.
The exact angle where the tester begins to slip determines the rating:
-
6° to 10° angle = R9 (Basic slip resistance)
-
10° to 19° angle = R10
-
19° to 27° angle = R11
-
27° to 35° angle = R12
-
Greater than 35° angle = R13 (Maximum slip resistance)
The R Rating Breakdown
Choosing the right rating depends entirely on the room's function and its exposure to moisture.
|
R Rating |
Slip Resistance Level |
Best Used For |
|
R9 |
Matte / Low |
Dry indoor areas like hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces. Easy to clean but best kept out of splash zones. |
|
R10 |
Medium |
The perfect all-rounder. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and living spaces where occasional spills happen. We would recommend a bath mat in bathrooms. |
|
R11 |
High |
Ideal for environments frequently exposed to water: walk-in wet rooms, shower floors and outdoor patios or porches. |
|
R12 & R13 |
Very High / Commercial |
Exceptionally textured. Rarely needed inside a home, but vital for commercial kitchens, swimming pool surrounds and public ramps. |
